Do you know what Tax Freedom Day is, besides TODAY, my fellow Uhmericans? If not, here. Nutshell-wise, it’s the first day of the year in which a whole nation has earned enough to fund the national annual tax burden. So basically everything that you’d earned up until today is the governments, and from this day forward you get to keep your money.

Of course it doesn’t work that way since they take a percentage out of your paycheck all year round, but it’s an interesting way to look at it (thanks, Tax Foundation!). In fact, some might consider it an OUTRAGEOUS way to look at how much we pay in taxes. I bet a lot of people in the United States feel that way.

But in New York City’s Union Square on a sunny day? Not so much outrage going on. In fact, most people were all, “Hey maaaaaan, taxes are ok – we like roads and public services and everyone should pay their fair share!”

Now, I make videos for people all the time, right? And they want me to cover certain topics – much like the very awesome Plentii.com wanted me to cover Tax Freedom Day. But the funny thing is, you just can never tell what the hell people are going to say in response to your question – so you just can’t go into it with a preconceived notion on the outcome. No one saw the outcome of this guy, that’s for sure.

Personally, I’m kind of with the liberal New Yorkers on this one. I kind of don’t mind paying taxes, because I think all of us in society actually use a ton of public services, and we tend to take them all for granted. It’s hard to have a hippie cross-country trip without ROADS. I really, really like indoor plumbing. And the sewer system. It works GREAT.

And I don’t even mind paying more if I’m making more. I don’t really mind pitching in to help people who are less fortunate – I don’t just blame people who need a leg up and write them off as lazy and conniving government-succubi.

The problem I DO have is when everything starts seemingly going to the shitter, and I seemingly keep paying more. THAT’S where I draw the line. You can have 40% of my paycheck, just please, let me see results. As long as I keep seeing results, we all cool. Cool? Cool.

And – Happy Tax Freedom Day, suckers!

I read an interesting article this week about a proposed ban on burqas in Belgium, and it raised a lot of questions in my noggin. Which was unexpected, because honestly, burqas are just soooo foreign to me, a woman who likes to do these kinds of things, that my noggin has always just kind of written burqa-wearing off as something un-knowable to me.

How could I possibly formulate an educated opinion about something so foreign to me? How can any of us, when it comes as such an extreme? I mean, in our culture, we encounter chicks with their buns and boobies out all the time, in various formats. How are we possibly going to understand a burqa? I know lots of people have lots of strong opinions about them, though. So I guess it’s a topic worth thinking about a bit more.

And, also, now this Belgian is bringing up yet another issue about them – a new one for me, at least, who always just wonders if it’s hot under a burqa. Daniel Bacquelaine, the Belgian who proposed the bill, says it’s not fair to let some members of society walk around all covered up and covert-like. He’s saying the burqa is unfair to society, not to the woman underneath it.

Is it? Is the burqa fair…to anyone?

Oh my GOD. I am so sorry. I really don’t know what got into me this week. For some reason, I just felt like making up a song about our dumb political system and making a video for it.

I didn’t mean for it to be so weird. Or awesome. But it just turned out that way. Sometimes you can’t control the art, you know? This just flowed out of me. Sometimes that’s just what happens when you are really FEELING something, you know?

And lately I’ve just been feeling soooo fed up with politics. The whole healthcare thing is out of control. The polarization of this country is not only ripping it apart, but it’s also very dumb. Because politicians are all the same!

All our politicians are bought and sold and PWNED by pharmaceutical companies or other major industries. They literally are incapacitated by the pact they made with those who helped them get into office.

Talk about a pact with the devil.

Anyway, the original version of this song, when I wrote it after drinking my Kombucha, was called “F$ck It,” not “Screw It.” But I didn’t think anyone would appreciate hearing me say “F$ck It” like 20 times in 2 minutes. Especially my mom.

So, Screw It. I mean, really. Just SCREW IT. I am soooo over politics and trying to make sense of them and if it wasn’t part of my job to deal with them, I wouldn’t.

So, to all you weirdos in politics, thanks for continuing to make the system run and deal with the absolute worst part of our society. You just do what you’re going to do, and please continue making sure my society doesn’t explode, and I will try my best to ignore you as much as possible, because you are all a weird power-hungry evil breed that is necessary for our current system of the world.

Oh and yes, the dude singing the bass line in this song WILL kick you ass if provoked. So don’t write anything bad about his performance here.

Peace.

One of the things I like to do on my vaguely-alternative news show here is to try something for the first time, ever, out on camera. Kind of like those dumb reporters who get tazed whenever the police taze someone. I won’t be doing THAT anytime soon!

One thing I had never, ever done until I did this video was hold a real gun – let alone FIRE a real gun. I mean, really: I had never TOUCHED A GUN.

And I have a real, strong, natural aversion to guns. But some people LOVE them their guns, and even include their right to bear arms in a cute little sentence involving GOD. Andrea Tantaros always used to say how real Americans love their “faith and firearms” anytime I paneled with her on The Strategy Room, and it always made my blood curdle. Sorry, Andrea, it’s true.

Guns have only one function, and that’s to hurt or kill a person or other living thing, and I just have a real problem with that. It’s an innate, basic feeling I have, no matter how naïve it sounds.

Now before you go and talk about hunting and hamburgs and all that, let me just say that a large portion of people I’m related to are hunters, and they all pretty much love hunting, and I love eating the animals they kill. But instead of arguing out any points, I’ll just say this about all that: bow-hunting. K?

K.

But I still recognize that a lot of people love the power and thrill of the machine that is a gun. I think it’s the same way they respect a really cool car. While I also am not enamored with THOSE, I CAN relate to admiring humankind’s creations and ability to control their surroundings.

And since I THINK there is something akin to that emotion going on in the people who love their guns (I’m not talking about the people who love their guns because it allows them to defend themselves against the bad guys, because I have NO basis on which to understand them just yet in my life), I thought it was time for me to TOUCH a gun and check out what the thrill was.

So here in this video, you shall see me wielding a gun for the very first time. Verdict? Meh. It was heavy and loud. I let my cameraman finish my rounds.

So, what do you think? Are guns good or bad? Let’s talk about that this week!
