Global Relief Technologies

One of the biggest social issues relief organizations face in the critical early hours after a disaster occurs – natural or manmade - is coordinating efforts with other organizations. Despite a growing rate of natural and man-made catastrophes, the main tool for rescue organizations in our culture remains the pen/paper combo. Enter Global Relief Technologies (GRT), who coordinates relief groups like the Red Cross and the military during catastrophic events using an ingenious countercultural tool called “The Internet.” Ever heard of it? Surprisingly, many governments haven’t tapped into the Internet for relief efforts (see: Katrina) – making GRT’s work that much more important. Check out this interview with their founder, Michael Gray, who is a lot of fun while he explains his work. He also explains how you can get involved, too. For instance, you can sign up at the Red Cross to volunteer locally and become part of life-saving efforts just by using your cell phone. Michael explains that and more about this important social issue of disaster relief in this interview.

  1. [..YouTube..] Dear Resident Hypocrite, you may not realize it, but this video actually provides an argument AGAINST your case for governmental healthcare.BTW, I built the VDOT’s EOC (emergency operations center) in Richmond back in 1993 and they pretty much used the same technology and approach. This is quite similar but on a larger, more global scale. At any rate, kudos to GRT.

[..YouTube..] I think he means that the governement is not using the internet to effectively gather and share critical time sensitive information/data with GPS coordinates in emergencies, like we saw in Katrina, especially between federal and state agencies. Again at Virginia Tech, law enforcement was struggling to inform and warn students while students were text messaging each other on cell phones and instinctively going to the internet to get timely information.

[..YouTube..] I agree with Munacra. I understand what GRT is doing, but to say that the government isnt know for use of the internet or innovating technology is simply not true. Probably 80 percent of the tech we use in everyday usage began and was expanded from the government and, as munacra said, they use the internet all the time.
