Cruisazy: What Makes Celebrities Go Bonkers?
December 19, 2009 196 CommentsSocial issue number a grillion: What the hell happened to Tom Cruise? How did he go Cruisazy? He did. There’s no denying it. So what happened? He was a cute, spunky little actor in “The Outsiders” one day, and then something like a decade later he’s jumping on Oprah Winfrey’s couch, yelling at Matt Lauer (which, ok, who wouldn’t), marrying a vacant baby vessel, and becoming the grand pooba of Scientology. What gives, Tom Cruise? What in our popular culture drives our celebrities to go bonkers? I think it has to do with the fact that they get worshipped by everyone they come in contact with in society, and they get buckets and buckets of money for pretty easy work. Ok, not easy per se: certainly working a checkout is a lot easier on the ol’ pressure cooker of a ticker. But dealing with press junkets, having to deal with all that insecurity as you act like a jerk on set in front of a bunch of people, dealing with the media picking you and your ego apart: all of that is still a walk in the park next to coal mining. And the pay is a mite better, too. But yeah, I think it’s the undeserved worship they get. It musses with their noggins. Even though they totally love the attention they get, they don’t realize that somewhere deep inside they know they don’t deserve it. And some of them fall prey more easily to it mussing them up more than others. Others with, say, a sense of humor about themselves? Others with a modicum of humility and the ability to laugh at themselves? Yeah. I don’t see Tom Cruise taking himself too lightly. Cut to couch jumping, folks! So, why do you think celebrities go nutso? Step right up and give me YOUR social issue commentary, right here on this little web talk show.
