Here’s the facts behind the countercultural medical controversy known as stem cell research: stem cells are basically undifferentiated cells capable of dividing and differentiating into loads of different cell known as stem cell research: stem cells are basically undifferentiated cells capable of dividing and differentiating into loads of different cell types: heart, lung, liver, brain, etc. So basically, they’re blank slate cells that can be used to build healthy tissue to help people whose tissues are damaged by disease or other injury. This all sounds great, right? So what’s the big social controversy, right? The controversy is that stem cells are often harvested using embryonic tissue — and religious people don’t like no one messing with no embryos. Ever. Amen. Apparently, stem cells are outside the cultural acceptance point. Personally, I’m pretty sure I’ll never know when a human life officially starts or when a human soul officially enters this reality. I’m happy with it being my lot in life NOT to know. Some things are just of other worlds, planes, or dimensions, and I’m ok with that. I certainly don’t want to mess with other people’s certainties, though, regardless (or especially) if I don’t agree with them. Especially over there in the mainstream’s conservative right. So when I found out in an alternative news source that scientists over at Medistem had found a brand-new place to harvest stem cells, I figured I should share the research. The new source? Menstrual blood. Watch the vlog to hear the story.

I think she’s smart, but what’s with the facial expressions distracting performance when talking about stem cells? Is it because americans are being imposed with drama as a mandatory subject since primary school? The film industry needs to feed the pinhead-making machine and they turn all americans into actors? Is either that or the girl needs anger mgmt therapy, not that I believe in therapy anyway, but probably she does. I’m not sure if blue suits this girl, maybe something more lively will do

Not your quote but, ‘killing an unborn baby’ Destroying an embryo is not killing an unborn baby, once a baby develops to a foetal stage, it is sufficiently developed to be called human, as an embryo the only thing differentiating it from algae are its chromosomes.

She probably thinks that beating “upbeat” and acting like she’s really into the subject she’s talking about, will draw more people into her subject. As for me, I agree that it doesn’t seem natural, and can be a little sappy. Either way, I mostly pay attention to the subject of the conversation.

My way of thinking, however, is that the embryo is well on its way to becoming an fetus. Once conception occurs, the process begins..hence the spark of human life.

Its you who are misinformed ! Menstrual blood stem cells are called endometrial regenerative cells and have a distinct molecular and function phenotype, look up the work of Medistem. I think its awesome that the Resident did this awesome piece.

Isn’t the company you are touting, Medistem, three year old company you are CEO of? So shouldn’t you have suggested I look up the research of your company? Is the company privately owned, or is it publicly traded?

I do wish you, and any researcher the best of luck when researching ANY avenue of stem cell research which might benefit people like my father, Laura Jackson, a girl featured in the documentary I posted here on youtube, and millions of other people who could benefit from research. However I feel its a waste of time to argue which avenue is better than another, and rather seek all avenues research to seek faster cures. Thank you. I didn’t know that at all. I don’t support taking from embryos because I am very much against abortion but I suppose it’s okay if you take them from menstrual blood. :)

I like the idea, but in the big picture I think we overuse our opportunities. such as should we really be trying to keep very old people alive forever? on a different level but the same question should we drive to the mailbox or cell phone people to “ask where you at?”is radio a tool of war or a place to hear people dump their girlfriends? Is botox a treatment for dystonia or a cosmetic procedure?

Those who are against stem cell research should first worry about so many people, even children, who’re dying in hospitals or having terrible lives just because we don’t know! enough.. a few embryos could lead us to a better society? where nobody’s blind, nobody’s in a wheelchair, nobody faces cancer..? well let us try, scientists have made much more to improve the lives of unfortunate people than any other human group, just get into your churches, then you’ll knock our doors to be healed.

  60. loggerbuck Says:

[..YouTube..] Truth is, there have YET to be any treatments using fetal stem cells. There have been a number of successes with NON fetal stem cells. And CORD blood is the more common source for non fetal stem cells. The whole Stem cell controversy was created by researchers working with fetal stem cells who wanted Federal funding. There has NEVER been a ban on working with fetal stem cells. Truth is they have been problematic… causing big medical problems for recipients.
