I went to check out this year’s Auto Show at the Javits Center, and I didn’t really know what to expect. I’ve gone in previous years to check out the splashy booths, million-dollar concept cars, and other general monuments to consumerism. This year, though, with the economy going to the crapper and the ridiculous sums of tax money being given to some of these auto companies, I thought perhaps it would be a little tamer. If I had just taken a giant handout from the government that came directly from hard-working people’s pockets, I might feel a little weird about spending thousands of dollars on a rotating podium. But that’s just ME. It certainly wasn’t GM, who had lots of splashiness going on at this year’s Auto Show. Honestly, it was surreal. Even aside from the economy, just seeing all these gas-guzzling, ozone-chomping, giant hunks of misused resources try to tout their environmental consciences was nutso. Between the rock of the economy and the hard place of the environment, all the Auto companies really tried to acknowledge a shift needs to come. But the attempts – the bad slogans, the stupid banners – just made the event truly bizarre for me. So that might explain why this video is a little bizarre, eh? Less about muscle cars, more about social commentary. Par for the course, I guess. Enjoy!

What’s odd is that the Chinese are not swapping their bicycles for motorbikes, theyr’e swapping them for cars. Which is, for them, a step backwards. While we in the West are trying to minimize our car usage. I don’t get it!

They trying to minimize car usage?Its like how Tata is lunching the world’s cheapest car for $2000 US. Excellent video, 5 stars. The US government should be spending money on alternative fuels and efficient mass transit, such as high speed TGV for domestic travel instead of airplanes, which dump tons of CO2 and contrails into the air. Still loads of SUV’s there, I guess the big 3 still haven’t realized SUV sales fell nearly 40% in 2008. Its nice to see someone else that “gets it”. My type of girl too.

The Dodge Camaro was not a bad car in the movie. LOL!! It protected people. Have most of us not seen transformers as kids?

It is a shame that we let our rail and light rail (nationwide) degrade the way we did…once the envy of the world now the laughingstock. I disagree with your thoughts on cars, though. Cars are still one of mankind’s greatest achievements. No other machine on earth of a car’s complexity can be operated by anyone without some serious brains. None are as reliable. They’re also very affordable to boot! The problem is we’ve misused the automobile, depend on it too much. That I do agree with you on.
