If after watching this video you wonder, who could possibly care about whether or not people call the U.S. “America,” let me answer: A lot of nutters on the internet who continuously email me about it. Seriously! I didn’t just invent this issue. If after watching this video you wonder, how could The Resident, a liberal and intelligent New Yorker, side with people who want to call the U.S. “America,” let me answer: Don’t be so quick to put me in a box, yo! What the hell is wrong with people that they really get riled up about this? You know, when I get battered over the head from any angle about such a thing – be it from the right, left, smart, or straight-up bananatown – I seriously just want to run in the opposite direction, fast. Because there simply is NO REASON to get all riled up about issues like this, from any angle. Like, get over it people. Americans have confiscated the name “America” for themselves, and by Americans I mean AMERICANS. And I don’t need to clarify that to any sane human being. Which is to say, if you are asking me for clarification, you are insane. K? K. There. I feel better already!

But there are other nations whose names start with “United States”…for instance, the country we normally call Mexico…whose official name is Estados Unidos Mexicanos which, when translated into English is either United Mexican States or Mexican United States.Mexicans are Mexicans, Canadians are that…Americans are American. All are North Americans. Your last point is the best one: the whole world uses ‘American’ to refer to citizens of the USA. Common usage makes it real.

Also, Mexicans or Canadians calling themselves Americans because they believe America is a continent need to reevaluate their world map. America – if it is not a reference to a country – is a hemisphere with a half in the North and a half in the South. Do Chileans or Argentinians call themselves Americans? Their whole argument is just dumb.

I think you have a very valid point, but you’ve put it across in the wrong way. I’ve lived in England for the past four years and everyone here calls it either America or the states. I don’t think I’ve ever come across someone who has had a problem with us Americans calling it that.

Argentina is in South America. That is one of the two continents of the so-called “New World”. North America is the other. The problem is in the discrepancy between the English language geography courses (which are based on geological distinction of continents) and the Spanish language geography courses (which are apparently based on the outward appearance of the hemisphere. I wonder why you separate Europe and Asia as individuals and not North and South America.My father is Argentinian.

Well, being Brazillian myself, I must say that we do not reffer to ourselves as “americans” and we do use that word to describe U.S. citizens. We consider Brazil to be part of America and usually use that word to reffer to the continent. We call your country US or United States. But we don’t mind the way you use that word.
However, you are missing a very, very important point. While there is a very large part of the american population that is educated, able to locate North Korea on a world map and generally does not see every criticism a foreigner makes about US politics as a threat to their way of life, an even larger share of your population is just a bunch of people who are lazy and overall ignorant about what is going on elsewhere (and by elsewhere I mean whatever might affect other countries, the whole planet or even other american states).
And the point is: we LIKE to annoy those people. The people who never once stopped for a moment and considered why call the US “America” and not the rest of the continent.
So, if you ever get corrected for referring to yourself as “american”, know we are just pulling your leg a bit. We all know what you mean, we just like to see if you are one of the americans who knows about the world or just a fly-over state wall-mart obese shopper.

It makes perfect sense that the abbreviation is the U.S., but would the correct term then be U.S.-ians or U.S.-ans? Does this happen in reality: NO! Tectonic plates don`t define continents.
