This is one of my favorite social responsibility videos o’ mine. I go back to this a lot, because the culture of New York City is steeped in consumerism and having all the coolest toys. Everything in our capitalist society seems geared to owning crap. Buying stuff. Stimulating the economy by working really hard at a company that is selling something to someone, so you can earn money to buy the stuff that another company is making. This is really the premise of our consumerist popular culture. Ain’t it grand? Ain’t it spiritually awakened? I’m so tired of being made to feel like I need to buy something. Around every corner is another hawker with wares: across every medium, down every street, even your NEIGHBORS try to sell you stuff at the Tupperware parties. My willpower is getting stronger, and I’m generally buying a lot less stupid stuff like clothes and expensive makeup and whatnot (yes, I am a girlie girl, got a problem with that?). But seriously? I’m kind of glad the economy is tanking a bit. Because we don’t need to be making a bunch of crap we don’t need, polluting our environment and lives along the way. Oddly, our economic hardships just might lead to some much-needed political reform and give rise to some social movements. It’s time for us to get back to basics, for our own sakes and our planet’s sake. So it’s kind of nice that the economy is helping us along on cutting back. Know what I mean? That’s just my social responsibility commentary. What do you think?

Ironic. Someone who buys six designer jeans worth over 1400$ complaining about consumerism. Believe me bitch, that ship has sailed… you have no right to speak. You’re only SAYING this shit to exploit the message in order to increase your video’s hits, and keep that check coming in which you WILL spend on more shit.

Consumerism feeds an abscess of fat-ass capitalists that deprive humanity of the energy it could have used to grow in a productive direction. Instead of finding solutions to the problems threatening to devastate the planet, all resources just go into a pustule.

Renegade has the right idea…Consumerism, or whatever you want to call it has taken over, just like drugs we are struggling every day to feed our souls with the feeling of being ‘whole’. There’s no need to look further than ourselves, for blame or answers…

One thing that I hate from democratic countries is CONSUMERISM. I was born in war tornado in Croatia when Yugoslavia was falling appart. I always Listened my parents and asked them: “How were you living in Yugoslavia if you weren’t a member of a party and if you wasn’t against communism?” They say: there was less choice of clothes, boots, shoes, etc., but everything was made in good qaulity and it was chep and you could wear some shoes for 20-30 yeras like they were new.

It’s called self-control – willpower. It IS true that advertising uses psychological techniques to get people to want shit they don’t need (google “Edward Bernays” and check out Adam Curtis’ documentary “The Century of the Self”) but really, people need to stop behaving like petulant, whiny little children and blame the advertising industry for what is, at it’s core, their own weak mindedness and shamlessly stupid herd mentality. Be a fucking individual and take responsibility for your life!!!!

I see all this potential, and I see it squandered. Goddammit, an entire generation pumping gas, waiting tables, slaves with white collars. Advertising has us chasing cars and clothes, working jobs we hate so we can buy shit we don’t need. We’re the middle children of history, man; no purpose or place. We have no Great War, no Great Depression. Our Great War is a spiritual war. Our Great Depression is our lives.

so let me get this straight, your idea of a social commentary about consumerism is to make a video showing off all of the expensive shit you have? You paid more for 6 pairs of jeans than I did for my work truck. You ARE comsumerism at its worst. Stop acting like you have a social conscious by getting all dolled up and posing with your yuppie furnishings/clothes.

Do I shop like this because im poor? Not really, I just dont want to be screwed by the obvious con that is consumerism
