You Are Currently Watching: Gawker’s Webutante Ball, 2010

I went to Gawker Media’s Webutante Ball last night, and it was fun! It wasn’t necessarily fun because of all the free drinks, or the bad dance music, or watching all the web-celebrity wannabes dance drunkenly to the bad music, which IS a lot of fun, but it was fun MAINLY because I got to ask Julia Allison and Gawker founder Nick Denton how the Internet has ruined their lives.

Boy, did THEY have different answers! So kiddies, there was a BIG BIG lesson to be learned at the Webutante Ball last night – if you use the Internet right, it is your friend. If you use it to be a web-celebrity and nothing else, you might just want to change your name and move.

NOTE: I really like Julia. I don’t really know any of her work, but she was totally sweet, and she is also friends with my girl Meghan Asha, so when I imply that she has used the Internet in a way that has ruined her life, I am only going on what she is, indeed, famous for: being famous for nothing. Honestly, she seemed just like a really sweet and pretty girl to me.

[..YouTube..] Does the internet have the capability to “ruin” lives? I think it’s more likely to state that certain people may “use” the internet in an attempt to ruin others. The internet itself is just a tool to connect people, or for some, a tool to disconnect one another.

[..YouTube..] when the second highly attractive woman started talking about the internet ruining her dating life… my head began hitting the keyboard. doh. doh. doh….

  3. rcookman Says:

[..YouTube..] It can effect peoples lives negitively. However you have to balance the pros with the cons. Most of this is people suffering from the always on nature of tech but as is the internet probably best to switch off every now and again. Like i’ll be doing straight after this. Remeber that all good things can be a curse and moderation is best.Did you enjoy the Webutante Ball, Lori?

  4. natedogs212 Says:

[..YouTube..] Great point! The internet is just an excuse for people to have for the problems in their lives. All the internet does is share information. Anyone who doesn’t want to share information about their lives should not try to advertise on the internet! Kudos to The Resident for pointing this out!

  5. joecounter Says:

[..YouTube..] @natedogs212 Well, but what about people that got problems in their lives and couldn’t talk talk to anyone?Probably the “community” could help?Joe.P.S.: The Internet is much more than sharing information…

[..YouTube..] @librano Imagine for a second you’re a hot girl; you’d think guys would be coming out the woodwork right? True..BUT here’s the kicker–they usually tend to be dudes that say/do stupid things just because you’re pretty. Or they are flat out crazy. That’s the dating life of ‘the hot girl’ as I understand it.

  19. 560e Says:

[..YouTube..] The Internet helped me a lot, because I discovered that 9/11 was an inside job. But now the all-powerful Rockefeller family, which owns maybe 50 foundations and think tanks, they want to shut down the Internet, because there’s too much truth being revealed.

  26. Dan Jakubik Says:

My thoughts about the Internet. It’s the greatest tool ever, for fast and easy information access and communication exchange throughout the world.

It’s really a “Library of the World”, open 24/7. As a life long information “junkie”, I’ve been using it since 1995, two years after it’s public debut.
The Internet we all know so well, is really an offspring of what was known
as Apranet, first developed and used by the US military to link their network of computers, way back in 1969.

I believe the Internet has definitely been misused and abused and more than previous tools of communication, such as the good old telephone and postal mail. The Internet is very anonymous, impersonal and it’s difficult to track down and catch troublemakers. Slowly, this problem is getting better. Technology, neccesity and time, will eventually solve this lingering problem.

The Internet is sadly lacking in regulation, for reasons of personal privacy and security. It’s long been illegal to use a telephone or postal mail to threaten or harass, but not the Internet.

The Internet simply requires emotional maturity, knowing how to to use it’s existing privacy and security features and a lot of common sense, in order to best avoid trouble making people.

  27. logixish Says:

[..YouTube..] I’d like you to recommend books to read that are purely fictional story based. Just for the hell of it. The Internet is good for sharing and amplifying positives. But you already know that

  28. gardengrowsevenonefo Says:
