One of the things I like to do on my vaguely-alternative news show here is to try something for the first time, ever, out on camera. Kind of like those dumb reporters who get tazed whenever the police taze someone. I won’t be doing THAT anytime soon!
One thing I had never, ever done until I did this video was hold a real gun – let alone FIRE a real gun. I mean, really: I had never TOUCHED A GUN.
And I have a real, strong, natural aversion to guns. But some people LOVE them their guns, and even include their right to bear arms in a cute little sentence involving GOD. Andrea Tantaros always used to say how real Americans love their “faith and firearms” anytime I paneled with her on The Strategy Room, and it always made my blood curdle. Sorry, Andrea, it’s true.
Guns have only one function, and that’s to hurt or kill a person or other living thing, and I just have a real problem with that. It’s an innate, basic feeling I have, no matter how naïve it sounds.
Now before you go and talk about hunting and hamburgs and all that, let me just say that a large portion of people I’m related to are hunters, and they all pretty much love hunting, and I love eating the animals they kill. But instead of arguing out any points, I’ll just say this about all that: bow-hunting. K?

But I still recognize that a lot of people love the power and thrill of the machine that is a gun. I think it’s the same way they respect a really cool car. While I also am not enamored with THOSE, I CAN relate to admiring humankind’s creations and ability to control their surroundings.
And since I THINK there is something akin to that emotion going on in the people who love their guns (I’m not talking about the people who love their guns because it allows them to defend themselves against the bad guys, because I have NO basis on which to understand them just yet in my life), I thought it was time for me to TOUCH a gun and check out what the thrill was.
So here in this video, you shall see me wielding a gun for the very first time. Verdict? Meh. It was heavy and loud. I let my cameraman finish my rounds.

[..YouTube..] Agree. We really need to enact some sort of gun safety education in this country. Guns are so tabooed in our civilian culture despite the fact that our country was partly founded on civilian owning firearms. Get the word out there, and bust the connotation that “guns are bad.” Guns are only bad if a bad person has their hands on one. Same applies for a kitchen knife…they’re bad if a bad person has their hands on one.

Anything could be used as a weapon, seriously…I could bash someone with an Xbox360 and probably kill them, but I wont. So should we ban those? No. Promote and teach gun safety, we teach sex ed we should teach something of gun safety. And Res…good for you for getting out there and trying this out for yourself…it is very relaxing!

[..YouTube..] I’ve spent time on gun ranges, and know which end of a gun to point downwind. It’s better to learn how to handle one with some supervision around than risk hurting yourself or others by learning it wrong.
The gun is an ultimate tool – you use it, and get immediate (and LOUD) feedback on your action.
You’re a reporter – you’ve got that psycho killer voice down. Pretty good shot for, what, 25 feet? The guys in Afghanistan get to do that at 400 yards.
As for actually shooting live things? No!

[..YouTube..] Most gun related deaths in the US are suicides, not crimes. Statistically speaking, more people die per year in swimming pools drowning incidents than by guns and more people die in driving accidents than by any other means (aside from preventable health issues such as stroke, heart disease, etc.) in the US. Ban swimming pools and cars?
And people forget that the largest mass murder ever committed by an American was done with home made explosives in 1995, not guns.

The person behind the gun chooses to fire the weapon at someone. And taking away our guns will not make things better. violence will still be there and there is no way to know for sure it will slow down crime or people killing other people in this country.

I’d have to say guns at best are a necessary evil. At worst, just plain evil. With a gun, a coward can kill the bravest soldier on the planet.
Sadly enough, I have to say it’s a good idea to learn how to shoot one – just in case. I can’t tell you whether or not to get one, even in a place like New York. I can however, recommend getting a dog. Even a small one is the best security system on the planet…ain’t nobody getting in without you knowing about it.

It’s a shame for me that Japan is used as an example of gun prohibition does’t help criminal prevention. But I guess I live in a country relatively safer than US.
Honestly I don’t understand why many Americans stick to own guns so much. But I have a big question to President Obama. Does restriction of gun help any economy issue? Is it really an important issue for you over there?
If US economy doesn’t improve, it also effects Japan’s and I’m very concerned.
I sincerely hope he would attack more immediate issues :-<

We have that impression because they’re the ones causing the problems that end up on the 10 o’clock news. In reference to webovisonca below; currently, those ‘waste of lives’ individuals are the ones that has the guns and they will get them regardless of gun laws. They’re criminals and don’t obey the law. Gun laws are hurting the everyday citizen who now has no way to protect themselves against the criminals.

Couple of corrections with regard to your comments.
First, Barry does not have the legal right to “take” away anyone’s guns. You are mixing him up with a dictator like Hitler or Kim Il Jung or assuming we practice the divine right of kings.
Second, responsible gun ownership is not a joke or something to make fun of. The vast majority of us gun owners practice this and no, we’re not gun toting Wyatt Earps just itching to shoot someone.
Third, thanks to socialist tendencies, the criminal justice system turns loose flakes, addicts, and violent thugs on our streets only to revert back to the very lifestyle that put them behind bars in the first place.
Fourth, the five-oh, aka police, cannot be on every corner, on every doorstep waiting to protect you. At some point in life, you must assume some measure of personal responsibility.
Yes guns kill. So does alcohol, cars, aircraft, knives, heroin, etc. You will never create a utopia on this planet where we all go around loving one another. There will be violence. There will be crime. There will be those who would rather take, steal, or destroy and those leeches need to be dealt with accordingly.

Hell Daley was even told by the town commisioners he is going to loose and he said he knew but he would fight as long as he could. That tells me he knows he has no legal way to ban guns but he knows if he has it in the courts it will allow him to ban them a little longer.

Oh and to your obvious, staunch anti-gun sentiment, well there is nothing inherently evil about a firearm, just as there is nothing inherently evil about, oh, say, a knife. Both are tools, and both can only be dangerous if the person using them has the intent to use them in a dangerous way. Otherwise, they are simply tools.

Look into history… before guns were regulated with these “assault weapon bans” and registration databases, background checks and waiting periods, a gun was just like a hammer or a shovel. use it on a daily basis till it wears out and then buy a new one. These days people take much better care of their guns… guns are treated more like cars now, but they remain tools.

[..YouTube..] @0GSX i didnt get any statistic from anywhere… statistics are often false, as they vary greatly depending on who conducts the research, and what their bias may be. Cause lets face it everyone has a bias of some sort, especially when it comes to the very touchy subject of guns and hunting. I formulated my answer from years of dealing with guns and gun owners.

[..YouTube..] Lori once again you brought you cuteness to the party! It was interesting to see the look on your face after the first shot–and your first comment ‘pretty anti-climactic, actually’ which is just perfect–its one of the reasons I like you. You went shooting, and revealed the TRUTH–its much like using a pneumatic nailer or a power stapler, or any other type tool. Your response was truthful and informative.
