To celebrate Earth Day this year, I decided to look into what the big boys might be doing to save the planet these days. You know, the big companies that have enough resources to actually make a difference. I was pleasantly surprised to see one company, PepsiCo, attempting to do just that.
Partnering with Greenopolis, The Entrepreneurship Bootcamp for Veterans (EBV), and Waste Management, they’ve built what they’re calling the Dream Machine and what I’m calling just plain common sense. Basically, it’s a recycling receptacle that’ll be placed around urban areas, ball fields, super markets, etc. – places where people finish beverages and end up tossing out the container since there is no recycling receptacle available.
I live in New York City, where there are exactly zero public recycling receptacles, so I think the Dream Machine is a very welcome, excellent thing. And the fact that proceeds benefit veterans AND the environment is an added bonus. As an added incentive for the public to use it, Pepsi offers a reward-point system, so whenever you do drop a bottle in the machine, you can earn points to a little something for yourself.
So, going to the unveiling of the Dream Machine was a great way to celebrate Earth Day, I think. PS I also got to meet Aisha Tyler, which for any Soup fan is a good, good thing.

[..YouTube..] Good story!
April 26th, 2010 at 1:23 pm
[..YouTube..] Great jop hope it will work and goes internationally..
April 26th, 2010 at 1:46 pm
[..YouTube..] I am a recycling coordinator for Frostburg State University and I recycle plastic now, but can’t find anyone who wants to take it. I wonder if I contacted Pepsi they could help me out
April 26th, 2010 at 2:02 pm
[..YouTube..] I’d like to see the Dream Machine clean the RIVERS and BAYOUS – somebody still has to climb, crawl, or swim to fetch the garbage in difficult to reach areas which cause the most polluted hazards.
April 26th, 2010 at 2:04 pm
[..YouTube..] This is a pretty good idea if it becomes mainstream
April 26th, 2010 at 2:06 pm
[..YouTube..] Dream Machine FTW! Hopefully This is also help more to spread recycling awareness wide internationally. Thank you Lori for this report.
April 26th, 2010 at 2:07 pm
[..YouTube..] @LalitaLilly These are much-needed in New York City – I am always walking around with bottles I need to recycle!
April 26th, 2010 at 2:12 pm
[..YouTube..] very cool!
April 26th, 2010 at 2:21 pm
[..YouTube..] Lori! Yes! Excellent story and you interviewed one of my favorite actors, Aisha Tyler too! All I can say is YUP!!!! Keep up the great work, Lori!
April 26th, 2010 at 2:26 pm
[..YouTube..] @jeromecha1 As a Soup fan, it was a HUGE awesomeness to chat with Aisha. Even though she stood a good foot over me, I thought we bonded.
April 26th, 2010 at 2:29 pm
[..YouTube..] That’s pretty cool. Smart response to the anti-bottled water campaigns going on.I hope it saves a lot more energy than it’s burning.
April 26th, 2010 at 2:36 pm
[..YouTube..] We recycle in my community. It’s often a hassle but worth the effort. I also try and use less and reuse what I can. Donate, buy used items and not fill landfills with crap.
April 26th, 2010 at 2:36 pm
[..YouTube..] Hej, you look better than the dreammachine.
April 26th, 2010 at 3:07 pm
[..YouTube..] Not going to work.
April 26th, 2010 at 3:13 pm
[..YouTube..] basically one of those machines that gives me 5 cents when i recycle a can….”what an innovation”(sarcasm)….we got one of those in washington heights
April 26th, 2010 at 7:07 pm
[..YouTube..] Then they ship the plastic to China! YEAA!
April 26th, 2010 at 7:17 pm
[..YouTube..] they should be in schools. i see people completely ignore recycling bins even when they’re right by the trash can. ppl my age would eat this up
April 26th, 2010 at 7:27 pm
[..YouTube..] Does anyone else feel helping veterans is overrated….?
April 26th, 2010 at 8:51 pm
[..YouTube..] this is focking hilarious. Only in the “developed” world they make thousands of big ass machines to make people recycle and get cupons for trash pepsico food. This is feel good recycling, to aiding the planet. This is sooooo Idiocracy
April 26th, 2010 at 9:07 pm
[..YouTube..] I’m sure that thing won’t stand in the places where it is really needed. The neglected ghettos. Instead it will probably stand in those rich suburban neighborhoods where people already recycle.
April 26th, 2010 at 9:15 pm
[..YouTube..] Hello,Lori. So long as there is a “reward” this could work. But, I think having to scan so much, may deter the convenience of it. In my town, we have separate bins, so recycling is at the home level.
April 26th, 2010 at 9:55 pm
[..YouTube..] It looks like a very nice marketing tool. Too bad all trash doesn’t have bar codes. Maybe if we all get bar codes instead the coupons can be marketed directly to us based on our recycling habits… just think of the possibilities…
April 26th, 2010 at 10:12 pm
[..YouTube..] How about not buying so many bottled water, and just carry your own reusable bottle?
April 26th, 2010 at 10:33 pm
[..YouTube..] @BeauMu Are you serious? Do you really want a barcode on your body? Seems pretty Orwellian to me. I prefer my privacy.
April 26th, 2010 at 10:38 pm
[..YouTube..] If this is all done by private donations, I’m ok with it. If it comes from public funds it kind of offends me. Why should tax money be used to reward people for something they should do anyway?! On top of that, why doesn’t Pepsi co just stop Selling bottled water and start selling re-usable containers and purifiers if it is so concerned about waste? I’m going to research this “Dream Machine” and see if it is all it’s cracked up to be.
April 26th, 2010 at 10:44 pm
[..YouTube..] wow, your hair looks great in this video, aisha tyler is tall.
April 26th, 2010 at 11:02 pm
[..YouTube..] I think the receipts, coupons, etc…printed out of the machines is probably worth more than the bottles inserted into it.
April 26th, 2010 at 11:27 pm
[..YouTube..] this is a good video
April 26th, 2010 at 11:52 pm
[..YouTube..] @theresident Don’t worry, Rez. As the saying goes, “good things come in small packages”.Admittedly, the saying is kind of also inherently suggesting that, therefore, bad things come in larger packages and, thus, implicitly, Aisha is possibly evil Satan spawn for being so tall. But let’s just ignore that, as if we didn’t notice it, and just take the good bits out of it (and keep our envious thoughts about the evilness of tall people to ourselves, smiling all the while, so they don’t suspect).
April 27th, 2010 at 12:28 am
[..YouTube..] With a screen it does take more energy then a normal recycler. i dont like that at all. Especially if we are gona save the world. . .
April 27th, 2010 at 12:58 am
[..YouTube..] very good video, great cause, what more could you want
April 27th, 2010 at 1:33 am
[..YouTube..] “the implications of the dream machine are huge” and Aisha Tyler is huger…Just drink water from the tap its cheaper and the water is tested daily for safety and purity…
April 27th, 2010 at 2:18 am
[..YouTube..] i think we need some of them in Australia!
April 27th, 2010 at 2:19 am
[..YouTube..] A nice idea, but somewhat gimmicky. Sure, you can put your plastic in there and get points, but not buying bottled water in the first place is far more environmentally friendly choice.
April 27th, 2010 at 2:20 am
[..YouTube..] Are they really going to recycle the bottles? I know most of the soda companies have to buy the cans/bottles back, but most of them are only required to recycle 10% of them…. and most of them don’t even do that and just pay the fine.
April 27th, 2010 at 7:09 am
[..YouTube..] But does it help veterans or does it help veterinarians?
April 27th, 2010 at 7:52 am
[..YouTube..] Heres a crazy idea: why dont we just tell all the big corporations trying to rape every living thing on Earth to FUCK OFF and drink water and eat fruit and vegetables if we get thirsty. Now THATS what you call a DREAM! ANYONE WITH ME???
April 27th, 2010 at 7:57 am
[..YouTube..] “dont you just love scanning!” YEAH! I love giving out valuable personal information to global corporations so they can continue to manipulate the masses with their media campaigns and take over any competitors in the market! WOOOOOOOOHOOOOOOOO
April 27th, 2010 at 8:04 am
[..YouTube..] Keep your dreams… I want my nickel!!!
April 27th, 2010 at 8:31 am
[..YouTube..] cool
April 27th, 2010 at 1:22 pm
[..YouTube..] @SOCRATES012 Scanning the bar code on a bottle… its hardly personal information. Yeesh..
April 27th, 2010 at 2:01 pm
[..YouTube..] loool you americans really are in the stoneage, when it comes to recycling. we’ve got those machines for at least already two years in germany^^
April 27th, 2010 at 2:16 pm
[..YouTube..] @nilnar dont you mean bah bahbahbah
April 27th, 2010 at 3:10 pm
[..YouTube..] Where was your “The Resident” mic flag?
April 27th, 2010 at 3:38 pm
[..YouTube..] @renegade2142 I am serious. If you thought “Big Brother” good. That’s exactly what I was aiming for. Marketing companies spend millions tracking what people purchase every year and keep highly detailed records. Fill out the one paragraph application at a grocery store to get the key chain for our member status. Are you a Costco or Sams Club member? Do you belong to the Barnes and Noble book club? To large corporations we are cattle. Cool enviro friendly coupons machines are just another tool.
April 27th, 2010 at 4:05 pm
[..YouTube..] @BeauMu Ah…a very astute observation. I think I’ll keep on throwing my recyclables in a recycle bin and let them keep their “points”. I really hope this scheme doesn’t use tax money. That’s what really angers me is corporations taking kickbacks and trying to come off as “saving the environment”.
April 27th, 2010 at 4:37 pm
[..YouTube..] @SOCRATES012 dude, its already been scanned when you checked it out at the store. You’re just rechecking. Regardless. You don’t actualy think the companies don’t already have this info do u?
April 27th, 2010 at 5:34 pm
[..YouTube..] game theory + garbage can
April 27th, 2010 at 6:22 pm
[..YouTube..] EXCELLENT VIDEO RESIDENT YOU HIT A GLAD SLAM WITH THIS VIDEO What Is that Song ? It’s Very Inspirational Song & Video ! We Need more videos like this !
April 27th, 2010 at 6:23 pm
[..YouTube..] @theresident Lets Make 2011 to 2021 A Great New Positive Decade !I Need This !
April 27th, 2010 at 6:25 pm
[..YouTube..] I ” Favorites ” this VideoYou Should Too !Support ” The Residents ” HardWork here !!!!
April 27th, 2010 at 7:55 pm
[..YouTube..] How much energy does it take to run these things and where does that come from? It would be awesome if it ran on solar power… does anyone know?
April 27th, 2010 at 8:46 pm
[..YouTube..] What is this crap? A machine you plug in and power to recycle. I’ll be dumping my recyclables in something that isn’t wasting energy to promote a company for doing what it should be doing.
April 28th, 2010 at 4:53 am
[..YouTube..] @BrutusAlbion they are ingraining this behaviour into the masses as though it were doing some good for the planet, when its all about global corporate control of the masses. Just think about it… may come off as a shock to you but you need to be aware of what really going on….
April 28th, 2010 at 9:25 am
[..YouTube..] I wonder how much electricity that machine sucks up just by being on.
April 28th, 2010 at 10:40 am
[..YouTube..] @SOCRATES012 look mate, I am no dummy, I know corporations own this planet so far and keep us in line to maximise profits. I’m not arguing against that. Regardless though, this behavior is a step in the right direction of saving the planet. Even if the core reasoning behind the behavior (profit) is wrong, the effects it will have are a small improvement on the planets condition. Ofcourse I’d advocate just dropping the monetary and consumption based economy but hey…thats too far away for now.
April 28th, 2010 at 11:09 am
[..YouTube..] I’ve got a dream machine… in my pants.
April 28th, 2010 at 1:07 pm
[..YouTube..] We’ve had these in scandinavia for … 20 years?
April 28th, 2010 at 6:18 pm
[..YouTube..] how much did they pay you to do this?
April 28th, 2010 at 8:12 pm
[..YouTube..] @BrettHartel Absolutely!
April 28th, 2010 at 8:48 pm
[..YouTube..] The world needs far more eggheads and far fewer jarheads. Now that I know that the money will (supposedly) go to veterans, I will never recycle using one of these machines. Ground troops for a nuclear superpower are nothing more than political pawns; they do nothing to actually defend the nation. If Pepsico changes the beneficiaries to cancer researchers I’ll reconsider.
April 28th, 2010 at 10:28 pm
[..YouTube..] you new look on your site is great. Now, I wish you would respond to a least one comment a year. come one comment? you can do that right? you will not have to respond until 2011 if you get that quota filled for 2010 now!!!
May 1st, 2010 at 11:18 am
[..YouTube..] @watevatube they lose money this way though(charging you 1$ for something that costs 5c)… so they had to create a way for people to reach a happy medium in their lives(wanting to be environmentally friendly vs wanting bottled water). Obv reusable metal bottle is the way to go… but clearly this is a problem and this is one solution that will help. It will also help people THINK about recycling and being more environmentally conscious. I think it’s pretty good. Not perfect.
May 1st, 2010 at 4:01 pm
[..YouTube..] don’t forget the thank them for all the corn syrup and aspartame *yak*
May 2nd, 2010 at 3:52 pm
[..YouTube..] 1:56 Hey, waitaminit, was that the chick from Serenity?
May 2nd, 2010 at 4:07 pm
[..YouTube..] @clayp72 Well, that’s why they call it a Dream Machine.
May 2nd, 2010 at 4:11 pm
[..YouTube..] @bradwatson7324 -You’re just another red diaper doper baby!
May 2nd, 2010 at 5:07 pm
[..YouTube..] the screen of the machine still contumin many energy !!
May 2nd, 2010 at 7:18 pm
[..YouTube..] It would be more effective to give free liposuction to all the fat people in America, then use their human fat as fuel in power plants. The savings in oil and coal could then profit funds for stomach stapling for all of them.
May 2nd, 2010 at 9:30 pm
[..YouTube..] We’ve learned NOTHING… Easy and fun? Saving our planet must be our JOB! Supporting veterans of a war for OIL, the main pollution source? It is only me or this just SUCKS?
May 3rd, 2010 at 12:12 am
[..YouTube..] asking a machine to fulfill your dreams?..i have a feeling you’re smart enough and pretty enough to get almost anything you want…helps to know what you want and remember you can’t have everything you want..
May 3rd, 2010 at 12:12 am
[..YouTube..] i find this chick is pretty cute! ;]
May 3rd, 2010 at 4:46 am
[..YouTube..] So .. people are too lazy to dispose of their bottles now, and somehow adding 2 more steps to it is going to promote a greener earth ? American’s are fat for a reason. You’re going to have homeless people sitting at these machines, playing them like casino slots. Also, your hotness was making those old guys stutter and sweat.
May 3rd, 2010 at 7:59 am
[..YouTube..] Hmmm, interesting…
May 20th, 2010 at 8:30 pm
[..YouTube..] Recycling & going green is BIG BUSINESS these days. How much is that little machine going to cost us? I hope they are an independent entity and not government subsidized. Also, looks like the mob (I mean waste management) has a happy, earth friendly feel to it. I wonder how many people donated their knee caps for this machine. (Don’t get me wrong, I’m loving the channel & videos).
