This is a really personal video, k? So be gentle with your commentary. K? So, I recently lost a loved one to a very mean and ugly disease. It rocked my world. I’d like to say that I consider myself privileged overall, though, to have made it this far in life and to only be losing a loved one now. A lot of people experience this pain a lot earlier in life, and a lot more often. So I’m really lucky to be only be going through this now for the first time. Still, it absolutely sucks. I miss him so much, I hate it. And when I lost him, I put out a video (See “Proverbial Roses”) about how the one positive aspect to this was that it reminded me to stop and smell the roses, because life is damn short, make no mistake about THAT. When I posted that personal video on YouTube, a fanfriend wrote to me and told me about his experience of flat-lining. He’s a paraplegic who lost use of his legs in a car accident. After the accident, he flat-lined in the hospital and they thought he was dead. He wrote to me and told me about that experience when he learned of my losing a loved one. And his story truly comforted me in that really crappiest time I’ve gone through yet. So thanks Tom, for this grassroots interview, and I hope you guys might find some solace in it, too. So what kinds of religion and beliefs are held about the soul in your culture or society, mainstream, grassroots, or alternative style? Feel free to share heartfelt comments here.

ok. first off, to get it out of the way im catholic but not a fundamentalists or creationists. i believe science is very important but its not everything. science is probability, not definite. whether light travels in particles or waves depends on the observer. i read a completely scientific article that agreed with this. it didnt mention religion once.

  2. joecandito Says:

ok, so ill start. here are my main reason for beliefe in God1. a creator outside of the limitations of logic, time, and the universe is the only logical explanation for the creation of the world. the law of conservation of energy says that energy cant be created nor destroyed. once again a scientific observation that doesnt hold up. also the big bang breaks many scientific and logical rules2. its been discovered that there is a part in our brain that is the “spiritual spot”

cont.why would that spot be there. wouldnt natural selection and evelution get rid of this “disease” that has caused, according to many atheists, so many problems. i concur with st. augustine’s beliefe that we humans have a God shaped hole in our souls. we are drawn to be fulfilled and that fulfillment can only come from God.3. this video is a good example of realistic religion. no tunnels of light or darkness. just peace love and forgiveness. hmm… who talks about that. u guessed it.

The bible has been remarkably accurate on many historical accounts. the moabite stone and many other historical documents support the bible. now i know ur gonna find some contradictions, but thats what happens when u have so many authors not focusing on getting all the details down but instead, focusing on the story. 5. ATHEISTS ARE GOING TO ROTT IN HELL!!! just kidding. i actually appretiate thoughtful atheists more than blindly accepting christians who would believe anything

    4. Historical comparisonsThere have been at least 5 known revisions of the bible. For the King James version alone: Before the printing press bibles were written by hand. Sometimes whole chapters missed or added nuance, or had political influences. While I agree that many lessons from the bible (10 Commandments/7 Sins, etc) could be good to keep one’s emotional/moral compass in check, if you translated “The Book Of __” into “Writings of Wiseman __” at least people could make it their own :)

I believe in life after death, but I’m going to say that I believe that the reason there are so many atheists today is because the bible has been considerably altered since the time of Jesus, specifically during the Middle Ages, and that the early Gnostic Christians originally believed in Reincarnation and was more spiritual in nature. These days, for some reason Reincarnation is absent from Christianity.

If there is an afterlife what’s the point of living? I mean the Gods must be really bored. Are just pawns in their game of fun? The reason most us keep on living is we’re scared of what’s next. Either you live so called happiness, suffer for eternity, ot get reborn. Maybe it’s like sleeping without the dreams. The reason I think there is religion is to live in a more orderly fashion. So many things we don’t know.

  54. captainrichspicedrum Says:

[..YouTube..] If you read the bible, contrary to popular belief, jesus will tell you that when you die, you just die and cease to praise god. However i grant it this, he does go on to say that when he battles the devil, he will awake his faithful with a loud shout. So i believe personally, that untill the gigaplex collapses again, we are all just dead. and the bible clearly says, dead are dead and nothing else, and if you ever think a dead person is communicating with you, it is the devil. and false.

  55. aubhar Says:

[..YouTube..] When your heart stops and your brain is still has electricity, your not dead. They can bring you back. But if your heart stops and the electricity is NOT there in the brain, you are dead and you will not come back. This is all bullshit. People, dont read into this.

  60. WizzardOfGlue Says:

[..YouTube..] death is like dreaming you don’t know your in it

  61. bagabooga Says:

[..YouTube..] Everything you know, think or feel….and all your beliefs and experiences are all stored in your brain. Your brain is a biological organ. When you die, so does your brain…..When you die, you don’t “go” anywhere, because all that was truly YOU dies when your brain dies. I know it is a horrible thought to think that when you die, that’s it..But it’s true. That is why man invented the concept of afterlife, to ease his worries and stroke his ego. We are MEAT, and meat rots when it dies.

  62. jespinalny Says:

[..YouTube..] i think im in love

  63. TheFlanker35 Says:

[..YouTube..] @bagabooga,By conservation of mass-energy, the brain has to go somewhere also.

  64. bagabooga Says:

[..YouTube..] @TheFlanker35 : Conservation of mass-energy happens all the time…When a piece of meat rots, it is converted into gases, water vapor, and inorganic chemicals. Now the neurons that held the memories of all your beliefs and knowledge are also converted into gases, water vapor and inorganic chemicals…So mass and energy is conserved, but the resulting products are totally different from neurons so there is no “going on” of your beliefs, knowledge or anything that made you distinctively you…..

  65. TheFlanker35 Says:

[..YouTube..] @bagabooga,If the neurons “hold” beliefs(whether or not they actually do is up for investigation), and the neurons are converted to other substances, the beliefs they hold must also be converted to other things too. Information, according to most scientists, cannot be destroyed either. There are always traces of information everywhere. If there are always traces of information in the remnants of neurons, there must a way to piece memories.

  66. bagabooga Says:

[..YouTube..] @TheFlanker35: Your beliefs are part of your thoughts…your thoughts are created by the interaction of neurons with stored information from your past, as well as new information gained through your senses. Once the neurons die, so does the information and beliefs that were stored therein. Information is useless unless it can be accessed. When you die, you lose all ability to access and process that information…it’s like a hard drive with no computer..and eventually, your bio hard drive rots.

  67. TheFlanker35 Says:

[..YouTube..] @bagabooga,When a hard drive crashes, it can always be restored. It isn’t always restored because it isn’t practical to do so and we don’t always know how to restore it, but as long as information cannot be destroyed, there is someway to access it. Since information cannot be destroyed, there is always a way to deduce the prior whole from the nature of its current parts. When archaeologists find a skull, ribs, and phalanges in one place, they might guess that there was once a person.

  68. TheFlanker35 Says:

[..YouTube..] @bagabooga,Another interesting observation about our brains is that specific memories don’t seem to be stored in one place, unlike a computer. Just as all somatic cells in the body have the same DNA, many parts of the brain appear to have the same memories but interpret them differently.

  69. bagabooga Says:

[..YouTube..] @TheFlanker35 : What part of this do you not understand? Let’s take one neuron, or better yet, one DNA molecule. When this molecule decays due to death of the cell, then it just becomes the raw material for something new. What you seem to be saying is that when someone dies and their remains fertilize a fruit tree, then if I eat a piece of fruit from that tree, I will gain all the memories and insights of the person that once lived, and whose remains fertilized that tree. So there you go….

  70. TheFlanker35 Says:

[..YouTube..] @bagabooga,Well you wouldn’t gain the memories if you ate a whole brain either, but the whole brain would contain the memories.

  71. bagabooga Says:

[..YouTube..] @TheFlanker35 : My point exactly….Once the brain dies and rots, all of it’s information is gone…re-arranged into less complicated patterns of molecules and atoms…..ready to become the raw material for some one else…a clean slate to create a brand new person or animal….with no past memories or thoughts or beliefs….hard as it is to admit, when we die, that’s it for us…Sorry to burst anyone’s bubble, but that is what life and death are all about…

  72. TheFlanker35 Says:

[..YouTube..] @bagabooga,The information still exists even though the dead can’t think of it(see Digital Physics). The information of ‘yourself’ is still there ultimately. That’s why I believe in a sort of afterlife. I believe you live on in the thoughts and memories of other people and so forth. This will sound kind of stupid but one of my influences is the religiously Humanistic Star Trek series and the old movies The Wrath of Khan and the Search for Spock.

  73. bagabooga Says:

[..YouTube..] @TheFlanker35 : Let’s look at a computer hard drive. If you subject it to high heat or a strong magnetic field, the atoms that were arranged in a particular patten to store data are re-arranged into a jumble…with no resemblance to the previous pattern. So the information once stored on it is gone forever. This is what happens to our brain’s neurons when we die. Everything we knew or believed becomes rearranged and lost. We can’t “go on” because that which makes “us” is no longer the same.

  74. bagabooga Says:

[..YouTube..] @TheFlanker35 : “Living on in the thoughts and memories of other people” is a far cry from a general belief in an afterlife..The traditional belief in an afterlife is that somehow everyone has a “soul” that departs the body when we die, and that soul lives on forever to receive either eternal punishment in hell or eternal reward in heaven. This is mythology born out of an ancient lack of understanding about the brain and how it functions, and what it does. It’s like believing in a tooth fairy.

  75. therookie93 Says:

[..YouTube..] He had this experience because all of the saratonin in his brain was used up. Before you die your brain does this and creates almost like a supergasm sensation. People tend to think of it as entering Heaven but it really is just chemical reactions in the brain. That’s why people after being saved from this often feel depressed because of the lack of saratonin.

  76. tomdenman Says:

[..YouTube..] Whats the point of life if everything dies?

  77. lolfunvidsman Says:

[..YouTube..] Afterlife doesn’t exist. You can call it “afterlife” but in reality there is no “life” to it. More like After death..Do you remember what you were doing before you were born? how about before you were even concieved? how about before the cell in ur daddys sack was even started? or your moms egg? no? thats what death is like. its just like before you existed so there is no reason to feel remorse or regret when someone goes, because I doubt they are even aware of there life or its end by then
