I am not a fan of pole dancing. I went to a strip club exactly once in my life, and that was more than enough. It wasn’t my catholic guilt/prudishness that made me recoil in disgust at the experience; it was the extreme sadness I felt for humanity that overcame me while watching these naked girls with glassy eyes gyrate in front of men who were too drunk to get it up anyway. How did these girls arrive at a place in their lives where stripping made sense as a career choice? Something definitely went wrong.
I realize how awfully judgmental this is. I realize there are many girls who think it’s a liberating choice, an empowering career move, a way to best the men who ogle them – by taking their money with such ease.
But I just don’t buy it. I cannot believe these women feel good about themselves, when they get naked in front of a bunch of strangers who look at them as they would an inanimate object. Literally. These women are being looked at as a side of beef: some thing to feed a hunger.
That just can’t feel good, sordid night after sordid night. All that empowering talk – who are they trying to convince with that, their audience, or themselves?
I’m not condemning strippers, I just feel bad for them. Sad for them, at the end of the day. Just like I felt at my one and only trip to a strip club.
Unless you count the time when a producer from the PlanetGreen show I did made me go to another strip club in Portland because the owner served “vegan” food, ie rice and beans. Thank GOD that never aired.
I AM airing this other foray into the world of strippery, however, because now there is this very weird trend of girls “pole dancing” for exercise. Now this, I don’t mind so much! Do it in your own home, get nekked for your man, who puts up with the REAL you in addition to the sex goddess that you are.
It’s a weird thing to have happen – taking the pivotal object of strippers out of the sordid den of shame and bringing it into your own bedroom. So I decided to cover it, for my series “New in New York” on Babelgum. Thought you’d enjoy seeing it here.
So what do you think? Is stripping/pole dancing a way to empower women, or is it a sinful, sad, sad part of our culture? Let’s talk about that this week.

Hey Lori,
Thought I would just comment as this sort of confuses me as well.
Firstly, let me start by saying I am a full red blooded heterosexual male. I have to admit I love looking at and admiring the beauty of women. That being said, I too have the same feelings of sadness whenever I have been in strip clubs.
I am a musician and have spent my fair share of time either sharing a stage or having “peelers” (as we call them here in Vancouver) open for a gig. Yes… I have had to bring my own bottle of Windex, Lysol, Mr.Clean or whatever disinfectant I can get my hands on to wipe down the pole because unavoidably I will come in contact with it at some point during the set.
I have met many women who strip for a living. I cannot stereotype them all but the vast majority of these ladies have some pretty huge issues.
Hollywood has glamorized the concept of strippers and prostitutes,(please I don’t mean to insult anyone by grouping the two together,but the line is crossed more often than not between the two professions), it’s not a stretch to see this come into mainstream.
If you get a chance have a look at the rise in promiscuity and exhibitionism among college students. The porn Industry is booming and I am amazed at the stories I’m, getting from some of the younger guys who attend universities and have been involved in one way or another videotaping sexual acts among students. It blows my mind! I even heard a story the other day from a co worker who had been warned from a school principal to watch who his daughter is hanging out with. Apparently kids as young as 12 and 13 are engaging in what are referred to as “rainbow parties”. The girls wear different color lipstick and the goal is for boys to get as many colors as possible and for girls to put your color on as many boys as possible! If you get my drift.
It’s getting out of hand.
Back to topic. I have no doubt that pole dancing is an amazing acrobatic work out. You have to be in great physical condition to pull off some of the maneuvers without a doubt. I have found myself dumbstruck a couple of times at the ability. I guess what I’m saying is I just don’t know why we focus so much on sexuality instead intimacy.
If a woman wants to be empowered, then conduct yourself in a manner that will be respected by males. We can be equal and different at the same time. Personally, I find myself attracted to a woman who is self assured. Someone who knows who she is, or at least is set on finding out. Not a victim, or an object to be used or as you say to “satisfy someone’s hunger”.
Personally… I hate to eat alone.

Think it is the connection between pole dancer=prostitute that casts the doubt. By itself pole dancing does require some skill, if that were all this would be left to then perhaps the stigma wouldn’t exist.
Did my share of pole sliding in my FF days, we had several wackos doing the two stories high trip down sliding head first, spinning left or right, doing the look-ma-no hands, or the-last-two-feet emergency break slide, the squealer slide… I don’t think any of use felt like strippers

As far as I know, it’s only a small percentage of strippers that are also prostitutes. I think it depends on the location.

In the context of this video, it could be supposed to mean: “what many people have in mind” – regardless of those people are actually right or wrong.

[..YouTube..] I’m a very active person. I rock climb and paddle down rapids. I’ve tried everything from high intensity aerobics to long distance swimming. I just started a pole dancing class for fun and I have got to admit it is definitely one of the more intense exercise I’ve ever done. It takes a hell of a lot of strength to throw ourself around on a pole. Also its a lot of fun, maybe if you got over the stigma attached to it and tried it out you’d rethink your comment.
