As the US plummets into an economic recession, many bad side effects are being felt by all: the higher cost of gasoline and oil is translating to a higher cost of everything. This sucks. But, I can’t help but wonder: is there a glaring positive side to this social issue for our culture and society, too? That might sound really unpatriotic, and I’m sure I’ll be accused of being a countercultural traitor of some sort, but to me it rings true. We SHOULD be biking to work. We SHOULD be figuring out ways to cut our dependency on foreign oil, sinking resources into alternative, renewable, eco-friendly fuel sources. We SHOULD be sinking less money into other environmental, cultural, and social pollutants, like paper products, gossip magazines, and seven hundred dollar handbags. A recession will make us stop and think about where we dispose of our disposable income, since we’ll have less of it. And we might just make a lot of choices that are better for our planet, for our culture, for our global status. No one likes us anymore, America: so maybe we need this economic time-out to figure out why. So now, go ahead: call me a big fat traitor. I’m used to taking the abuse. Let me know your two cents on this social issue.

I agree however that the big have to get smaller and bring the jobs back home. Just because a business can get big doesn’t mean it should at the peoples expense. Better to grow big slower and keep us working.

Yup, my husband has worked at the same company for 7 years and only go one little raise the 2nd year. $40,000 + and holding. The company failed and just got bought up buy a bigger company. He is one of the fortunate few to go with the buyers. We have to sell our house and will lose a lot of money in the deal. Stop ragging in this country. I am tired of all the political correctness that is ruining us and our values. If you don’t like it here I hear Mexico has room.

Well.. here we all have cicle paths everywhere.. next to the highway, roads you name it. We also have taxprograms that when you buy a bike you can pay that from your incometax… ones in the 5 years.cycling keeps people healthy.. and there’s no polution.

No.. if people run out of good ideas than people losing there jobs. We have some branch codes here in Holland. That means when you want to start something.. and have a profitable idea (something that the bank can say ok we’re getting our money back) you can lend money… but you have to pick the right branche.For instance if you want to open a bookstore and there already are 20 in the neighbourhood, probably a bank would say there’s to much competition. But if you go for alternative energy.

People will fight tooth and nail to keep them A green agenda will never survive if you continually ask people to give up luxuries. You also have to remember that some of those supposed luxuries are necessities. Some people can’t just bike to work- they have to drive.In the end, the only intelligent path is green TECH! When we come up with alternative, eco-friendly energy, everyone wins.

I agree with you in almost every subject. specially in this one. I came from México as a legal immigrant not because I didn’t have a job, I did have a good one, but since my wife is too used to the US life, I thought that it would be hard for her to live there. I lived very though economical situations while I was growing in my country, but I know for sure that it made me really value things. We value water, toilet paper, food, etc because is not easy to have them like it is in US. We’ll learn!
