I admit it, I watch terrible reality TV shows. A lot. I watch them and I point and the screen and laugh in disgust, all the while appreciating the fact that these people will disappear into oblivion any minute but right now they think they are the shit. They do disgusting things on TV for the big prize of fame. They will do ANYTHING on TV for the prize of fame, really. Sometimes that means just parading around in a bikini with three inches of ass-crack hanging out, and sometimes that means eating a bag of big vomit. It’s always something degrading, though. And all the contestants do it with such ZEST! But so…after this week, when the world learned that one of the contestants on these vile shows turned into a heinous murderer, it really made me wonder. Did seeing himself on these vile shows doing all these degrading things contribute to his turning into a murderer? I mean, think about it – while they’re filming, they’re all excited about the cameras and the attention and the free booze, but then months later they see it all edited together…and it’s not so glamorous anymore. In fact it might be pretty awful, and it might send someone down a very dark path. For me, when the news broke that Ryan Jenkins was wanted in the murder case of his wife or exwife, and then a few days later he was found dead in a motel in Canada…well, I immediately was like, wow, the media is really going to have to question the morality of these reality shows now! But it doesn’t seem to be happening. I’ve read a few sentences here and there that point the finger at the programmers and producers of the shows, but not much, considering. Is no one else out there thinking this is absurd? Is no one else out there thinking that we are missing a BIG BIG turning point, a point of no return? Anyone? Anyone? Here’s how MTV is painting the picture.

Usually I think you are right on, but not on this one. I think that was domestic abuse gone off the deep end and had nothing to do if he was on some crap TV shows or not.

Well, like some other people have commented, I too usually agree with your points in your various (awesome) videos, but I think you’ve missed the mark on this one. If there was really a correlation between skeezy reality television programs turning people into murderers (directly or indirectly) than there would be more than one or two cases to show for it, considering how many such reality shows are out there.

It’s the economy! If that scavenger hadn’t found the suitcase in that Buena Park disposal container, her remains would be rotting out in a landfill, perhaps never to be found, and our murderer could be out speedboating against the Coast Guard (a new Reality Show: “WaveRunners”!)Blame Reagan and Bush.Every day I see more and more shopping cart pushers on the streets. It is a very sad indication of our society

I believe it was completely unrelated, going onto the show was like a summer camp. He returned to his normal life and snapped just like he would’ve done before if he was met with whatever it is she did. Anyone who tries to blame reality TV is just looking for a reason to run their mouth or badmouth televison. Also I don’t believe they should’ve pulled the show.

They had no problem showing it when Megan was attacked by Sharon Osbourne, but, when something unrelated happened with a non-star they pull it because they think it will be too controversial? Since when did they care.

I think VirtualZach is correct. The man in question was probably like this anyway. The worst you could say is that the shallow life of a TV star who decided to stop progressing in his life (thanks to the easy rewards from being on TV) was accelerated towards tragedy by his involvement in said TV shows.

I don’t waste my money or time watching reality tv by having a satellite dish and can view like 300 channels. Sometimes, TruTV is hilarious, and I will watch it occasionally. As for this John and Kate show, I never heard of it until they were breaking up. However, I can’t blame the producers of a show if someone goes nuts and they shouldn’t be responsible just because a couple met on TV. So, lawyers should get involved now? People have to take responsibility for their own actions.

come on. You’re not going to tell me that we are completely irresponsible, are you? If anything I do wrong can be blamed on society, can I also not take responsibility for my nutrality, or goodness because it’s society’s doing? I think people are trying to weasel out of responsibility for their actions because of this kind of thinking. Stop letting them off the hook. TV didn’t make him a murderer. He made him a murderer. Or are you saying TV exploits the irresponsible? Hmm. That’s a thought.

I think her entire point is to question and to get people to question things that are happening. Makes sense to me that you have to realize it before you come to a solution. People in this Country are definitely “asleep at the wheel”.

Nope. The pre-existing psychology of this murderer may have attracted him to risk-taking behavior but really, not all clowns are scary. Buffoonery is not linked to violence. That is characterised by an absence of “thinking”; brutal murderers tend to think too much taking psychotic behaviors to extremes.

It appears the guy also went to McDonalds from time to time. Are we going to blame McDonalds too now? I understand that you have a problem with mainstream media (altho I think you would put those problems aside very quickly if you got an offer from a network), this whole thing doesnt seem to have anything to do with those shows.
