This political commentary interview is pretty special to me. The ACLU is one very interesting, culturally significant organization to me, one that gets a TON of flack of being ultra-liberal, yet at the same time has defended such ultra-conservatives as the KKK and super-religious groups. The ACLU is basically all about one thing: protecting people’s constitutional rights as members of society in the United States. How great is that? To lots of people, it’s great up until they realize that that means they’re about protecting people with opposing beliefs as much as they’re about protecting yours. And that’s where the flack comes in. People get caught up in the fact that the ACLU protects people with different beliefs than their own, and that makes them maaaaaaad. To me, I think the ACLU is a necessary, great organization in American politics that is mind-bogglingly level-headed in their ability to represent both the liberal left and the conservative right — from the countercultural ultra-extremes to everything in between. So I decided to interview them about what they feel is right or wrong. And Chris Hanson does a wonderful job of telling me that right or wrong doesn’t play into their jobs: only protecting people’s rights is the right thing. I really enjoyed this interview and think the ACLU is a great organization. That’s just my political commentary. What do you think?

to ChrisArlingtonVA – So “true libertarians” see nothing wrong with a government monopoly on weapons? The ACLU doesn’t see a problem with that. Are some of the amendments to the constitution so unimportant that we should just repeal them?I suppose then I am not a true libertarian because I acknowledge and defend all the provisions of the bill of rights, whether I personally need them or not.By the way, I marked your comments as “not spam”

im not really sure where they stand with gun law myself, but right to abortion, so it may not be in the bill of rights but that doesnt mean its not a right.

I am the very first person in line to support the ACLU the moment they aggressively embrace the right to self defense as a fundamental human right. I don’t need a piece of paper (the Bill of Rights) to tell me that if a strong person attacks a weak person, the weak person has a right to some means of defense.Had the Jews been armed before the holocaust, the Nazis would have had a much more difficult time murdering them. But Hitler had implemented gun control laws…

I no longer support the aclu. This organization has become hypocritical in some of its agendas. There’s a case now where a woman, who has a daughter, broke up with her abusive lesbian lover. due to domestic abuse against her & her daughter whenever her lover became drunk. Breakup was mutual. Now the lover is suing the woman for full custody of the biological mom’s child. The kicker? The aclu and several gay activist groups are supporting her! They’ve made it a gay issue! It’s a Horrid mess!

I saw that shortly after I asked you that question. I must say I’ve lost some respect for the ACLU. Although, in all fairness there mission is not to defend the constitution it’s to defend what they see as civil liberties. i still don’t think they’re trying to push a leftist agenda though because they’ve defended Jerry Falwell, the westboro baptists and just recently they defended a student that wore a shirt to school expressing their pro-life views.

That statement is ridiculous. They DID agree with the Supreme Court when it said there is no individual right, now they disagree when the SCOTUS says it is.At least they are constant on this issue in their position of empowering the federal government and limiting that of the people.

I think homosexual activities are very “icky” but I’d be willing to host a freaking gay pride parade in my front yard if it meant ensuring that we would forever have the rights to own and use all types of weapons protected under the 2nd amendment (which includes military weapons)

As a Klansman I highly value my right to free speech. Unfortunately there are people who would like to take away the right to free speech from people like me while at the same time insisting on maintaining that right for themselves. That is NOT free speech!! What they don’t understand is that if my free speech is taken away then everyone elses will too.I believe in real free speech for everybody and not the phony bologna PC version.

When supporters of the ACLU point out that they support the KKK, they are usually trying to show that they are intellectually honest, standing up for rights that they don’t necessarily agree with. The only problem is they are extremely intellectually dishonest when it comes to the 2nd Amendment and their actions against Christianity vs Islam.

This includes:- threats of violence (like saying “i’m going to kill you” to someone – especially against the president or other officials, and bomb threats- statements that will incite a panic or riot (like yelling fire in a crowded building)- saying sexual things to minors that could be interpreted as sexual advances- knowingly telling lies to police, FBI, etc…Renouncing citizenship, while not illegal, is a bad idea

I don’t agree with the automatic weapons ban as much as the next guy but that’s not an example of the government completely banning weapons that can be used to defend against a domestic threat such as in Nazi Germany.

I am threatened with prison time if I carry my gun in these places, which are generally unsafe. If the gov’t bans effective weapons, it might as well be a total ban. What bans do you consider “ok”? What if they allowed bolt action .22LR rifles with iron sights only? Citizens need effective weapons, not guns that are decades old.

I avoid most gun-ban places, but I should have a right to visit my family in California without being in danger from illegal alien gangs who couldn’t care less about gun laws.

That kind of comprehensive immigration reform needs to come from the federal government. So if you have a problem with immigration, you should be pointing your finger at the fed. Obviously, the ACLU, which has been on the front lines of more Supreme Court cases protecting the rights of Americans than any other private org., would prioritize American citizens rights above all.
