15 Minutes of Lame

Andy Warhol was so right about the whole 15 Minutes thing, but he didn’t explain WHY some people want this cheap, disposable fame.

I mean, I could get a LOT more views if I wore lower-cut shirts, used stills of me eating a banana on YouTube, or other cheap tricks.

But I refrain from those things even though I know they’d bring me money, because I prefer to think I actually have something to say – that I actually am doing something other than hunting for fame and fortune.

I could be dead wrong on that, BTW. But still.

But this 15-minute breed – that’s ALL they want. Fame and fortune at any cost. The question is, why? Why is this their goal? How did we in society come to value fame sooo much that we have people willing to be the butt of every joke just so they can be in US Magazine?

I don’t get it. Unfortunately, though, I think it’s only going to get worse.

    Dear Resident,

I think you are more intellignet than you give yourself credit for.
Thanks again, for yet another interesting topic of discussion.

Andy Warhol’s famous comment of 1968 does seem prophetic.
He saw the future evolution of technology, beyond television, which we know know as the Internet.

Our culture has been celebrity and fame obsessed since the birth of Hollywood in the 1920′s. The Internet and the recent popularity of YouTube, Facebook and MySpace, have definitely been taken advantage of by the attention / fame seekers.

I agree with your reasoning, as to why some people seek out this, aptly named “cheap fame”. Lack of love, approval and acceptance during childhood are definitely factors, along with the chemical imbalances of certain mental disorders.

Ever notice, how so many TV and movie actors and women working in adult entertainment (including prostitution), often come from broken families and troubled childhoods, historically speaking ? I have.

If we lacked in receiving love, attention, acceptance and approval, during our childhood, we’re more likely to seek it out during adulthood. Just, a very basic human need going on here.

I am one of those who avoid to ruin my reputation unless i know that they will never see me again. To be realistic, i feel the king of the situation and void from inhibitions, that doesn’t mean i’m getting ridicolous, i’m just taking the advantage. The kind of situations occur when you’re a tourist, you can make many filthy moves, and leave without a trace. But that’s it, i’m not what are you talking of, they are called >—Attention Whores—<

[..YouTube..] You point is well made, but you are only touching on the “15 minutes of Fame” hypothesis from the high end Entertainment perspective. I would have to think that most people on YouTube hope one of their videos goes viral, and thus they would have their 15 minutes of fame.Wouldn’t you like this video to go viral? Wouldn’t you like for everyone to know who you are? Boy, I bet 15 minutes of Fame could open a lot of new opportunities.
