TV Rots Your Brain

I love TV. It is my favorite medium for social and cultural entertainment. It’s true. The boob tube. The idiot box. It’s my favorite. Television is a terrific litmus stick for our culture and predictor of where our society might be heading on a historical sociological level. It’s also buckets of fun. A lot of people blame TV for the demise of our culture and collective brain-power. A lot of people say vegging out in front of a TV rots your brain. On some level, I totally agree with this. But the truth lies in the vegetation part, not in the TV part. I think vegging out in front of ANYTHING is what kills the noggin, when done for repeat, extended amounts of time. Conversely, if you watch TV analytically, aware of the social statements its putting forth, dissecting plot points as social commentary, or identifying the programmer’s political motivation, say: well then, TV is activating your brain while you are watching. No vegetation there, folks! So TV to me is just like any other form of entertainment or other media. If you allow it to suck your brain out, it might. If you use your brain while enjoying that form of media, your brain won’t rot. Use it or lose it. This is your brain on drugs. That was a good commercial, remember? Wait. What was I talking about? Oh! Nevermind. Gotta run: “Dateline: To Catch a Predator” is starting! I’ll watch that while you tell me if you think TV has become a social issue or not.
