You Are Currently Watching: The Word “Hate” is Overused

This is a pretty fun one, but still a social responsibility study nonetheless. See? Studying CAN be fun! Basically, I think the word “hate” is overused in our popular culture today, especially when paired, as the verb, to the subject, “I”. The overuse of the word hate has kind of sucked the meaning out of a word and sentiment that once packed a punch in our society. And I don’t think that’s a good thing. I mean, come on, right now when you say, “I hate that,” it really sounds like you’re saying, “Ugh, that again.” Doesn’t really convey true, utter, blinding, rage-filled hate, now, does it? Or at least: if that’s going to happen, we’ll be needing a new word with widespread acceptance as very bad to balance out our vernacular yin and yang, I think. So…what to replace hate with, what to replace hate with… Loathe is always a good one, but too archaic-sounding for the masses to use properly… Abhor sounds way too snooty… Repelled is nice, but it generally requires a preposition in this context and implies more of a physicality than pure hatredOooh! Oooh! I think I have one. Abominate! How about we start using abominate when we really hate something? And then it’ll make people laugh too because they’ll immediately picture the abominable snowman and…ok, maybe not. Crap. I hate it when I can’t think of the right word. Just forget it. Move along. Nothing to see here. Except of course for this social responsibility commentary video action, natch.

Hate is the natural response to injustice, evil and stupidity. Hate by its self is not wrong. Nor is love by itself right. Is the man who loves to hurt people a good man? Same rule applied to intolerance. Hate when its due, love when its due.

I hate the crap the US has gone through because of its involvement in the Middle East.Sadly I like the though of George Carlin’s satire of Hit and Runs. “Leave these people alone; they’ve just been in a major traffic accident!” Let just say sorry and leave.Actually on topic, many words are overused. Swearing has become so common that saying ‘damn you’ is one of those things that people would just laugh at.If someone says “I hate you” it means almost nothing. Words have lost their meaning.

I think, that the word hate is loosing it’s former shape, so how can it be overused if the original word doesn’t match the new meaning of the word? If everybody somewhat agree that hate nowadays stands for anoyingment (spelled right?? xD) and understands that the person in front of you really means it that way, that is the meaning of the word as any other words there are. It’s kind of the definition of words isn’t it? Does I make any sense at all?

Great answer. Love is overused as a word FAR more than hate…and yes, that does have a negative effect. It dilutes the purity and integrity of the concept.
It’s important to love, and to hate (one cannot exist without the other, and without either of them all you have is cold indifference)…but be careful what you choose for each of them, and never use either of them unless you mean it.

It tends to drain me. “Love thy enemies, do good unto those who hurt you.” I think Jesus nailed that one on the head.I can be angry at a situation or person. It helps me oppose them so they do no harm that which I love. But I try not to allow it to become hate.

[..YouTube..] God damn.. Yes, the word hate is overused. Like for example, when people say that they hate their parents ’cause they didn’t let them have a party at their house like one time. Really? Do they really want to hate their parents for that?I mean that (at least for me), that hate is something that can only be used when you really have a gruge against someone. You want to see them dead and/or suffer really bad. Just the thought of them makes your blood bubble of rage, I think that’s hate.
